My bug has returned. Quilting bug that is. Ive been sewing, quilting and embroidering like mad...ufo's are getting turned out....yeh, and lots of new things are happening. I have 4 partly made bags on the go and 2 table runners with matching coasters of course but I will save them for another post when they are finished. This is my idea of trying to get organised for my holiday. Clearly it is not working. Im off to Melbourne, then over to Tasmania with my gorgeous sister and her lovely husband, then back to Melbourne for a few days, over to Adelaide, back to Alice Springs for a night with my friend Jackie and then home. Gosh Im tired already.

Another lovely day doing nothing but craft. Sad I have to go to work Monday. I could easily get use to this. Finishing some ufo's and adding a couple of new baby quilts at the same time is coming along nicely. The dragon flies are now a wall hanging, which I have added some beautiful beads to. The photo does not do it justice. I have put the first border on the little blue on. Not sure where this one is going but I have some great fabric choosen ready to do what ever my hands tell me tomorrow. The red one is a little like the blue one, know idea what I am doing with it but have added the first border. This one has been floating around since early last year. i made it from the left overs of a king size quilt. The two Winnie the Poo quilts are for some friends that are having babies this year.

Ok, so the dragon is the top finished for my eldest son, the dragon flys I have put a border on and am not sure if it will be a place mat or bag and the purple is made totally from my scrap box, including the beautiful border. It is the off cuts from my sister in laws quilt.

On the weekend I had the most amazing opportunity to participate in a workshop that Jinny Beyer was conducting in Alice Springs. Needless to say my creative streak has returned. Thank goodness. However before I get started on anything else I am working my way through all my half finished projects. I have got 2 Winnie the Poohs ready to applique and finished this racing car quilt (not the best photo). Say tuned because there are more to down load.

Today I was lucky enough to attend a work shop with a lady named Pam. She is so talented and an amazing lady to work with. She share lots of techniques and advise with us today. Above are some of the techniques she taught us. We dyed the fabrics, stencilled with real leaves and plastic stencils, got advice on drawing and painting on fabric and also practiced some pen and wash work

The return of my creative bug

I thought I would spend my two days off getting back into crafting. Wanting to be organised I thought I would finish the one or two UFOs and then attack my scrap fabric bin and make a scrap quilt. BAD mistake. I now have found about 8 to 10 ufo's that I started working through today. I also sorted all my scrap fabric into colour ways to make a scrap quilt, after the UFOs are finished. I finished satin stitching the dragon below.

Made the little girls quilt, pictured with some embroidery that I finished yesterday (the colour looks terrible in this photo, it is really purple and turquiose,) I finished 2 hand towels for my mum, and decided on the layout for the black and read ufo above. I have 3 embroideries that I need to decide what to do with and have about 20 coasters waiting to be pinned and sewn. I also have 3 other small quilt tops that need to be finished. No wander I am tired. I will post as I finish each UFO. Wish me luck, Im going to need it.

New quilt for my boy

This is the first stages of the dragon applique quilt I am making for my eldest son. Its all beautifully ironed down ready for the hours it is going to take to satin stitch it. I have decided to use gold thread which should hightlight the dragon. Fingers crossed. He has been warned that he wont be receiving it until his birthday next year as I am going to enter it in the local show in July. I have been very slack over the last few months and have not done any craft work. Working full time, exercises and planning the 50th birthday seemed to take every spare minute. Hopefully I can get back in the swing now.

This is the beautiful belated birthday gift my in laws had made for me. Each charm letter represents the initial of the first name of one of my sister inlaws, brother inlaws, neices or nephews. The heart represents my mother inlaw who I love dearly but she sadly passed away a year ago. Isnt it stunning.

Today I had to have my beautiful little dog Levi put to sleep. I took her to the vet thinking she had teeth problems that had become infected and it turned out she had a tumor. She turned 12 this month and I know I have done the right thing and not let her suffer but it is such a hard experience to go through. She really has been the sweetest girl and I am going to miss her terribly.

My 50th

These are a few of the photos from my 50th birthday. I have never felt so loved and special, even after my sister inlaw dress me in bunny ears and tail. I had an amazing night with family and friends who travelled from all over Australia.
My boys Roland and Scott did a fabulous job and worked extremely hard to make this the night of nights. The pictures above are the venue, my gold chain from the Flanagans that has a photo of my 2 boys lasered on it and the last ones are some of my family and some of the special kids in my life.
My two special boys, Kadyn and Kane helped me cut the cake.
My very good friend Annie Dejong made my signature bear which has travelled to Brisbane to have Chrissy sign it.
Chelsea did a great job of the delicious cake.
I received many other well wishes from family and friends that were unable to be with me but were definately in my heart.
Roland my son flew from Adelaide to Darwin with adopted son John then drove to TC with my other son Scott, Mum travelled from Mackay,sister Pat and husband Heinie flew from Melbourne to Alice Springs then drove 515 kls to TC, brother David and wife Beth drove from Mackay, Aunty Dot and Uncle Jim drove from Mooroopna, Aunty Marian, Uncle Fred and Catherine drove from Jimboomba, The Henwood family from James Town, Russell, Zoe my adopted daughter and Kane the adopted son from Brisbane, Trish and Charlie from Borroloola, Penny, Eden and baby Kiari drove from Darwin. Of the 6 kids that I refer to as my children 5 were able to attend. There was also a number of local friends who attended to make it a perfect night. Naturally there were those that couldnt make it and I missed having them with me. Chrissy, Beau, the Green family, Yvonne, Patrick just to name a few.
One huge highlight was my very first card from my English Aunts, Uncles and cousins.

Tennant Creek Show

This is a couple of photos of entries from the Tennant Creek show. The purple quilt is the one I made for my sister inlaw and it won Champion exhibit in needle work and also needle work best sewing....yes i am still feeling very pleased with myself. The red quilt I actually sold to a lady for what is was worth. I am absolutely soaring...........Also pictured are some of my pen and oil paintings. It was a great compliment to sell the quilt and also get the champion exhibit. I also had a very high offer on the purple quilt but would not sell as it was a present. Do I have a big head. Absolutely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

inexpensive place mats

I made these two simple inexpensive place mats today. The pink one is simply some wrapping paper with the childs photo place in the centre and the motor bike is a peice of fabric. I have then laminated them. The only caution I would add is to not add layers as if wont laminate if it is to thick.

As I am currently on 3 weeks holidays, I am taking the opportunity to practise my folk art. I decided not to go away but stay home and do some craft and gardening. I spent 2 full days working on these frogs and Im really please with the results. The set of three I have completed two sets as I wanted one for myself and one for my sister inlaw Robyn. These are the some of the projects I have been working on over the last few months. The first is a quilt that my sister inlaw Robyn asked me to make for her sister and my sister inlaw Carol. It is showing a little blue in the photo when the fabric is actually purple. I have decided to do a couple of quilts using the round the world techniques, however each one will have a different lay out and colour way. I have completed a red one that can be seen in earlier photos. Photo number 2 are the finished fabric bowls that I am putting away for birthday and christmas presents. The last photo is of some pen and ink drawings I am working on. I will publish close ups when they are finished. I also have some embroidery on the go. I must say I like having several different projects on the go at once. It allows me the freedom to relax and enjoy all my favorite crafts.

this cute little kitten is staying with me why I find her a new home. I have tried to find the owners but no one has responded to my notices left around town. She is the sweetest little thing. As you can see, she loves my sewing box and bra, my little dog wants to mother her, but my poor godson doesnt know what she is and is very wary of going near her.

Its been a while since I have posted and so much has happened. Sadly my beautiful mother inlaw Alma passed away on rememberance day. It was a huge blow to her family and everyone is feeling the loss and sadness. I miss her calls and advise. She was so knowledgable about so many things. Gardening, cooking and daily life are just a few things that I would jump on the phone to ask nana (Alma) about. A large part of my garden comes from cuttings she would bring me when she visited Tennant Creek.

These are a few of the projects I have completed lately. The bag I hand embroidered with varigated DMC thread then quilted the bag. It received a first in our local show. The cats where a photo of an embroidery on a denim jacket that I saw on the net. I decided to paint them instead. The centre picture is a result of a work shop that I attended on the weekend. It is pen and wash. I am addicted. The picture isnt very clear but I am really pleased with my efforts. I went to the craft council at 10 in the morning and didnt leave until 4.30pm. The day before the same tutor (Pam) did silk painting as a workshop. I will post pictures once it is steamed. And my big news is.......drum roll..........I got champion exhibit in needlework for my whole cloth, hand quilted quilt at this years show. Yeah for me. lol

I have recently been looking at quilt photos and noticed how my taste changes. 4 years ago I made the bottom quilt after completing a machine quilting workshop with Adina Sullivan, then 3 years ago I made the top quilt to help me give up smoking and Iadored the bright, vibrant fabrics. No pastels, country or pales colours for me. Bold and brilliant only. Now as much as I still love these quilts and have never been able to part with them, my colour preferences have totally changed to romantic florals and tamer colour ways. I wander if I will go full circle back to the brights

both my boys have left home. Scott lives at the top of Australia in Darwin, Rolands at the bottom in Adelaide and Levi (our dog) and I are somewhere in the middle at Tennant Creek. Levi really misses the boys so I am helping her to make these lovely wall hangings. One each for the boys. I probably should say men, given they are 27 and 23 this year. Anyway after Levi posed so beautifully with her poster, I printed the photo on to fabric. I will now sandwhich, quilt, bind and put a hanging sleeve on each one.

This very handsome devil of a horse is actually a copy of a zigsaw puzzle that I saw in a catalogue. I fell in love and traced around the 2" diagram. Then using a friends photocopier enlarged the drawing to 18" x 24". Next step was to hand paint the orange yellow fabric, then using reverse applique to finish. The indian is exactly the same method except the pattern started out as a tattoo

Today I cut up strips of fabric, used two sided tape to attach it to A4 paper. Then I added some buttons and colour photocopied them to make this lovely stationary.
Next I am going to print recipes, patterns, home remedies etc on it. Once that is done I will laminate and include in gifts to family and friends

Quilt for Oscar

If you double click on the image you will be able to see the quilt I have just finished for Oscar Edward Crisp. Oscar's mum Sarah Hughes asked me if I would make a quilt for her baby boy and this is it finished. Oscar is not due to be born for another 4 weeks so we are not sure if he likes it yet. His mum is having a baby shower on Saturday so I will present it to her then. I machine peiced the top and machine quilted the nine patch blocks then hand quilted around each of the teddys. I used stem stitch to personalise and embroidery Oscars name.

Allergy to prescription

Well here I sit feeling quite sorry for myself because I am unwell. Last night I had to get my friend Janelle to cart me off to hospital. What started off as a sore lower back turned into a very scary night. Last tuesday I started experiencing lower back pain, which I didnt think to much of. I had some anti-inflamatories so just thought I would take them for a few days. However come Monday this week the pain wasnt subsiding and I was starting to take panadol as well but nothing seemed to work. So off I went to the doctor who prescribed slow release tramadol. At the pharmacy the pharmasist asked if I had taken these drugs before and as I had not he warned me they could have side effects of vomitting etc. If any symptoms produced I should stop taking and see the doctor. Me being me who never has a reaction to anything took a pill at 9.30 am and went back to work. By 11.30 am I was feeling drousy and a bit strange so took myself home and spent the next 4 hours on the couch unable to wake myself from a deep sleep. Next started the vomitting, the later the day the worse I felt so off to the hospital I went. The hospital staff took my pulse and it was 42 beats per minute instead of 60 to 100...so next the ECG, bloods etc and an over night stay in hospital. Everytime I would nod off to sleep my pulse would go done even further to 38 beats per minute. My heart appears to be fine but I have to travel to Alice Springs to see the specialist just to be safe.I will never take a prescription again without cross examining the doctor. Appartently he could have prescribed a 4 hour dose of the same medication to see if I was going to have a reaction. PS the good news!!! No back pain for 24 hours. Its back now but I think I will just suffer it

We really are a lucky country

How lucky am I. I have friends Tracy and Peter Henwood in Jamestown in South Australia about 1800kls away. Tracy rang to tell me mutual friends from Tennant Creek, Janelle and Brian had visited with her for a hour or so on their way home from holidays. Tracy has sent some bottled fruit that they have preserved home for me with Janelle and Brian. In the past I have also received home made jam which was delicious. This morning I got a phone call from another lot of friends Trish and Charlie in Borroloola near the Gulf of Carpentaria about 800 kilometres away. Borroloola is a very popular fishing spot. Anyway Trish rang to say Charlie had been fishing and caught a Baramundi and she was sending it down to Tennant Creek for me on a plane that was leaving within the hour and could I be at the airport to pick it. This is asking the girl that lives in the middle of the desert, where fresh means frozen bread, where the only fresh thing is air and where the only place to go fishing was with a pack of cards. Could I be at the airport !!!! So there I was when Alex the pilot landed at 10.45 am with my freshly caught, beautifully filleted fish. And just to top it off there is enough for 8 dinners for me....am I sharing, not on your Nellie. lol

One for each of the boys, Roland and Scott for when they give me grandchildren. Dont keep me waiting to long guys! In the mean time my beautiful godson Kadyn used one at his baptism. The top quilt is Scotts as he was living at home when I quilted this one so he has put dibs on it.
The bottom picture was the next step up and this quilt is single bed size. I still havent mastered getting good clear shots but I think if you click on the photo it will enlarge and show better detailing

This quilt is one of my many favorites and takes pride of place on my four poster bed. I really enjoyed shopping for the fabrics and making the pattern up as I went along. When I began all I was sure of was that it had to be blues and purples. I am very pleased with the finished project

The Midnight Mouse

Once apon a time there was a family that lived in Staunton Street Tennant Creek. The mothers name was Tracy and the fathers name was Peter. Tracy and Peter had five beautiful children. Fern, James, Rosie, Liam and Lilly.

Tracy and Peter decided to get the children to help them grow vegetables in their garden.Fern, James, Rosie and Liam help to plant tomatos. Every day they would get sun light and water and they grew into beautiful big red tomatoes.

Sadly there was one problem. It was a tricky little mouse called the midnight mouse who would sneak out why the family slept and bite holes in the tomatoes.

When the Henwoods left Tennant Creek and moved to Jamestown the little midnight mouse was sad. So was their friend Sue Green.

The midnight mouse had a great plan but new he needed some help.He asked the chook Gail if she could help but Gail said no.He asked the budgies if they could help but they said no.He asked the cat next door if it could help but she said no. No- one knew the way to Sue Greens house. What could he do?

One day when he had nearly given up hope, Peter came to visit his old house and show the new owners how to work the airconditioner. Why everyone was busy Midnight mouse snuck into Peters car. Imagine his surprise when he heard Peter say that it was very cold in Jamestown. Oh no thought Midnight mouse now what will I do, I really dont like the cold. He was stuck in the car and very frightened where Peter was going. Not to cold Jamestown I hope.

To his utter amazement Peter stopped at a house and a lady came out to tell Peter to come and have a coffee. Yes !Yes ! It was Sue Greens house. Quickly he jumped out of the car and ran around to the back of the house to hide untill it was safe to come out.

When Sue had gone to bed the Midnight mouse came out to explore and guess what he found to eat. Sue's big red fat juicy tomatoes.The End........Thank you Henwoods for sharing your mouse but most of all your family, love and unconditional support. I love you all heaps and miss you every day

This is another little embroidery project that I completed from a magazine. My friend Janelle and I purchased some cheap manicure sets and made these up for family and friends for christmas 2005. Most we personalised with the receivers names.

Apple Slice

This is a delicious and simple apple slice. When you first look at the ingredients dont be fooled into thinking I have made a mistake. Make this slice once and I am sure you will make it again and again.

Combine 1 cup of coconut with 1 pkt vanilla cake mix (home brand ones work especially well)and 1/2 cup of melted marg. Spread mixture into a greased lamington tin (7" x 11"). Bake in a moderate oven , 180 deg celsius / 350 fahrenheit until golden brown. Remove from oven and top with a large tin of commercial unsweetened cooked apples. Now mix together one small tub of sour cream and two eggs that have been hand whisked. Spread over apples and sprinkle with cinnamon. Bake in moderate oven until set.

I receive 2 chook pin cushions as part of my christmas gift from my friend Tracy( Mad Quilter). As usual I copied her pattern and have made this one for our friend Janelle. I think I will start a new craze and get Janelle to make one for one of her friends and so on and so forth

My mum has come to spend christmas with me in the outback. Why she is here I am making good use of her knitting and crochet skills. Here she is making me one of many covered coathangers that I need. She is making them from feather wool and are very simple. You could use any type of wool. Using 4.5 mm needles cast on 80 stitches and continue to knit 18 rows. Cast off and fold in half long ways. Unscrew the metal hook from a wooden coat hanger. Stitch one short and the long side closed then insert the coat hanger and stitch up the last seam. If you feel along the wood you will find the hole to re-screw the metal hanger part back in.

This is my current project that I am working on. It is a babies cot panel quilt that I am hand quilting. Its lovely to relax at night in the lounge and stitch away. Im so glad I discovered hand quilting. I spoilt myself when I stopped smoking in may 2003 and bought a very beautiful silver thimble from the Thimble Lady. I highly recommend her products and quilting style

This very different little wall hanging was done by my 22 year old son Scott. Scott was watching me embroidery and declared " thats easy, I can do that". After showing him how to stem stitch, he drew these graffiti images on calico and did this! I must say I was amazed that this big burley lad could do something as delicate as embroidery. Once he was finished I combined the peices to make this wall hanging. I just need to finish it now

This is the friendship blocks our local quilters individually finished in 2003/2004. After sitting around the craft rooms for about two and a half / three years unfinished, I decided to make it into a complete top. There are only two of us original quilters left in town so it is a nice reminder of friendships once shared. I have sent it off to be professionally quilted( someone else is paying for it, hence the extravagance) and then I will bind it. I hope to contact all eight participants to show them. Once I finish it, it will then go back to the craft rooms for future generations to admire

A Teddy for my Godson
